This section will cover the designer line of tubs which include many styles that will be discussed in detail. Whirlpool tubs, air-jet tubs, combo tubs (dual system), drop-in tubs, alcove tubs, soaker tubs (garden tubs) and the popular freestanding tubs.

Q: What is a soaker tub or garden tub?

A: A soaker tub or garden tub is a designer tub that can either be wall to wall or built into a tub deck or freestanding. The name indicates that is a bathing tub only with on jet system.

Q: What is a whirlpool tub?

A: A whirlpool tub can be the same layout as a soaker (garden tub) however it would include a hydro whirlpool system consisting of a pump, motor and usually 6 jets or more. This system uses water pressure and air to produce the water flow and the massage action desired.

Q: What is an air-jetted tub?

A: A tub with an air-jetted system includes and pump that circulates a volume of heated air throughout the bottom of the tub through more jets than a whirlpool but much smaller jets. This system invigorates the entire bathing area but does not focus on particular muscle groups as the whirlpools do.

Q: What is a combo tub (dual system)?

A:  This is a tub that includes both the whirlpool system and the air-jet system together and can be used together or independently. This has become one of the most popular in all tub models.

Q: What is a drop-in design tub?

A: A drop-in designed tun means that the tub has a finished edge on all sides and can be mounted in a tub deck with all sides exposed. This type of tub can also be used in an alcove with walls surrounding it. In some cases, an optional tile flange kit must be used for proper installation.

Q: What is an alcove designed tub?

A: This type of tub called an alcove fit has a tiling flange built onto the tub on the back and two ends for fitting between a wall to include tile or marble for a shower. These tubs cannot be used in a tub deck.

Q: What is meant by freestanding tub?

A: A freestanding tub is designed to fit onto the floor and has all sides finished. These have become very popular with decorators and designers in the past few years and are growing in popularity. They are similar to the old fashion clawfoot tubs, however, are offered in many more styles and modern configurations today.  Some have areas for the faucets to be mounted, however, most use a floor mounted stand up faucet. Most freestanding tubs are only available as a soaker tub (no jets) however, some are now available with full jetting systems. Check with the manufacturer of dealer for information.

Q: What materials are designer tubs made of?

A: Most of the designer tubs are made from acrylic, however, some modern versions are now available in a cast stone.
